Firelizard is a small press, founded in 1998.
We specialise in combining fine poetry with fine art.
The Firelizard, or Salamander, was believed in the
13th and 14th centuries to pass through fire
without being burned. Traditionally, fire is the medium through
which the soul must pass on its journey through the physical world.
Firelizard books bring together poems and visual images commissioned
from well-known artists to explore that journey in images of direct
experience.
Firelizard Press was founded to support the work of
the Bethesda Arts Centre in the Karoo village of Nieu Bethesda,
South Africa. After the ravages of Apartheid, millions of people
were left without identity, dignity, or the means to survive. The
Bethesda Arts Centre offers workshops in the arts, and resources
of materials and a place to work, where local people can discover
the healing power of self-expression. It also has a gallery where
work is sold to passing tourists.
The Centres patrons include playwright Athol
Fugard, painter Cecil Skotnes, and Denis Goldberg, Director of the
charity Community Heart. To find out more about the Bethesda
Arts Centre, look at its website: www.bethesdafoundation.org.
Profits from Firelizard books go to supporting the
work of the Bethesda Arts Centre.
